As in any treatment program, the primary step to take in the path to recovery is to accept and not refute “denial,” a defense mechanism that addicts frequently employ and that effectively stops them from accepting treatment. Once this obstacle is conquered, treatment can be performed more effectively than it would otherwise. It is important to understand that Internet addiction is a progressive illness that is treatable. The disorder affects the addict, their family, their employer, and their community. It is called “the hidden illness” since there is no smell on the breath nor stumbling of steps or speech. Nonetheless, it is as debilitating as alcoholism or drug addiction.

For family and friends struggling with a loved one in denial, Dr. Young has created a new ebooklet, Breaking the Denial, a step-by-step guide that shows families how to confront an addicted loved one. If you already know that you have a problem with Internet use, Dr. Young has written several e-booklets for immediate and confidential help to take the first step towards the path of recovery.
